In Isaiah 58, God identifies and describes a kind of fast that is pleasing to Him. We often call it a Negativity Fast. I would ask you to consider Isaiah 58:7-12, where God tells us how to respond during this fast and how He will move in our midst as a result. When we consider walking in a manner worthy of our calling, as Paul instructs in Ephesians 4:1, we are often tripped and entangled by sin. However, this is simply not necessary. When we ponder Romans 6:11, it empowers us with the truth that we are dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. While following Jesus, walking with Christ and in our calling, we are surrounded by negativity. Therefore, I am calling us to a 7 day Negativity Fast, so that we will not walk with the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand and be influenced by sinners, nor sit with mockers and cynics. Instead, we will delight in God’s word, meditate on His promises and live as life-giving followers of Jesus, altering our world around us because we are planted by rivers of living water.
