Episode 38: Empowering Leadership - Part 4

Concluding the series on empowering others in leadership, Lance shares with us on how to help people grow and be successful at the intersection of their personal and professional life.

Notes:

The 5 Layers of Empowering Leadership:

  1. I do it. I witness the work before I ask someone to witness the work.

  2. I do it. They watch. Decide. Develop. Encourage.

  3. They do it. I watch. - The right components for the best handoff.

  4. They do it. - Witness release.

  5. They do it. A new person watches. - Reproduction.

4. They do it. (Someone else watches.)
Steve Backlund writes in his book, “A Culture of Empowerment” - “one of our main missions in life is to empower others to become what they never thought they would become. We are called to be influencers.”

Now that we have raised up, clarified, and empowered others how can I lead to ensure future success?

You want to lead, empower and help people at the intersection of their personal and professional destiny callings. Personal is about their inner-life and professional is about their outer-life, i.e. leadership, ministry, department, etc.

Consider a “check-in” and a “check-out” so you can assess how things are going and in-turn give yourself and others a greater chance at growth and success.

A leader’s job is to identify potential in others, help developed it and release it.

The Check-In - Personal Life

The check-in is about a person’s personal life. A check-in is about helping someone grow on the inside, in the areas of character, growth, attitude, etc.

  1. Inner-Life

    • Slow down for loving union.

    • Marriage or singleness is a sign and a wonder.

    • Practice restful delight.

    • Live from your true identity.

  2. Helpful questions - From Neil Cole and modified in my experience.

    • What is the most amazing thing you have seen God do since we last met? Explain.

    • What, from the scriptures, is God teaching you and what are you going to do about it? Explain.

    • Have you been exposed to sexually alluring material or allowed your mind to entertain inappropriate sexual thoughts about another this week? Explain.

    • Have you lacked integrity in your financial dealings or coveted something that does not belong to you? Explain.

    • Have you been dishonorable, selfish or unkind in your relationships by damaging another person with your words, either behind their back or face to face, secretly wishing for their misfortune? Explain.

    • Have you given into addictive behavior since we last met? Explain.

    • Have you continued to remain angry toward another? Explain.

    • What are you celebrating? Explain.

    • How has God made His presence known to you this week? Explain.

The Check-Out - Professional Life

  1. Outer-Life

    • Culture (the “why”, values, mission and vision)

    • Practices (mindsets that shape methodology)

    • Priority management (keeping the main thing, the main thing)

    • Goals and outcomes (properly measuring success)

    • Celebration (fueling the soul with love, affirmation and celebration)

The Danger

  1. Micromanage

    • Fear based.

    • Opportunity: to trust!

  2. Insecurity

    • Ego based.

    • Opportunity: to partnership and support!

  3. Misplacement

    • Wrong person in the wrong role.

    • Failure based.

    • Opportunity: to learn.

Big Questions to consider:

  1. What do we stop doing to ensure future growth and success?

  2. What do we start doing to ensure future growth and success?

  3. What do we correct to ensure future growth and success?

  4. What do we invest in to ensure future growth and success?

  5. What do we reward and celebrate?
